Prologue
Small Hinges, Big Doors
As the year winds down, I've been looking at the projects I've got on my desk that I'd really like to finish up. One of these is a short, Q&A series where podcasters from around the world have sent me questions about growing their podcasts.
I love Audacity, but I'm not a gang member who won't use anything else. I think it's important to be flexible, because different projects use different tools.
So ... I'm looking at recording a series of episodes with these other tools in order to experiment with them. And my plan is to record the Q&A, delivering information for podcasters that's easy to implement quickly and will yield big results.
How to quickly improve your audio quality, how to get more listeners to your podcast, etc ...

Podcast Hosting Skills
How to Be a Better Host
I want you to listen to this guy for three minutes because he's got some great advice that will help your hosting.
My thoughts on his advice ...
First of all, yes, embrace the power of the record and review process. This is one of the best reasons to edit your own audio.
I love that his "first review" is all about audio. Just listen and focus on your voice—ignore any visuals as they can be distracting. This is why I prefer doing remote interviews with just audio, rather than audio and video (even though my podcast is audio only).
What aspects of your voice do you love? What needs improvement? These are the things to listen for.
I like his advice on getting a transcription to look at filler words. By bringing all your words into your conscious awareness, you can work on eliminating filler from your speech.
Recording yourself and reviewing/editing the tape is a powerful exercise that can significantly enhance your speaking and presentation skills. I encourage you to do it!

Two-Minute Advice to Create Better Podcasts
Three things that will make your podcast better ...
- When speaking to listeners on a radio or podcast, it's crucial to create a personal connection by addressing them as individuals. Using the word "you" instead of collective terms like "you guys" or "listeners" helps forge a one-on-one relationship. This approach makes each listener feel personally acknowledged and valued, as though you're having a conversation directly with them. Personalization can enhance their experience and foster loyalty.
- Use engaging storytelling techniques, where you share anecdotes or experiences in a relatable manner. This not only captivates the audience but also encourages them to see themselves in the narrative.
- Asking rhetorical questions keeps your audience engaged and prompts them to think about their own perspectives, further deepening their connection with your content.
These techniques help build a sense of community while maintaining an individual touch. They're easy to do and can be added to your episodes without any additional work.
Podcast Humor
Thanksgiving and Podcasting
Thanksgiving dinner is already a recipe for awkwardness, especially after an election, but it reaches a whole new level when your family has tuned into your podcast.
For example, Aunt Linda might ask about that "colorful" story you shared about your wild college days. You know, the one you thought only your loyal listeners would hear.
Cue the awkward silence.
Good thing you're used to silence and also good at transitions.
On the plus side, at least you'll have content for your next episode.
