Prologue
We Need to Talk About Twitter
Lots of people are saying that Twitter is dead. It's not. Even a legitimately "dead" site, like MySpace, still gets a ton of traffic ...
But Twitter is changing.
Everything changes ... especially in podcasting. The way we record, the way people listen to our episodes, the way we schedule guests ...
And communities, like the one that was on Twitter, can collapse very quickly.
Same for the community around your podcast. One day you're hot, the next, you could set yourself on fire and nobody would care.
There is no "set it and forget it" in podcasting. If you're not changing alongside your listeners, they're going to find somewhere else to go ... like Bluesky.
So don't get complacent. Keep moving forward with your hosting skills, your content, and the way you market yourself.

Podcast Marketing
Steal This Email Template to Ask for Reviews
I once sent Seth Godin a "dollar letter" with $1000 attached (via a payment to a related charity) and the promise of $5000 more for him to write 500 words for a book I was working on.
He declined.
But I did receive a nice email back from him, which explained why. And I explain more about this story in the audio version of this newsletter, if you're curious about that.
This email is a similar concept and will work for you to get reviews for your podcast.
Podcasting Tools
Free Tool to Schedule Multi-Person Episodes
I love this free scheduling tool for getting multiple people in the same place at the same time. It's perfect for multi-person episodes and meetings.
How it works ...
- Create a Poll: Go to the Doodle website and click on "Create a Doodle." Enter the details of your meeting, including the title, location, and any notes or instructions for participants.
- Select Dates and Times: Choose a range of dates and times for the meeting. You can select multiple options to give participants flexibility in choosing when they are available.
- Invite Participants: After setting up the poll, invite participants by sharing the link via email or other communication channels. They don’t need to have a Doodle account to participate.
- Collect Responses and Finalize: Participants will vote on the dates and times that work best for them. Once everyone has responded, you can see which option is the most popular and finalize the meeting schedule based on the poll results.
These steps make it easy to coordinate schedules without the need for back-and-forth emails. It will save you a ton of time!

Podcast Production
The 3-Step Writing Framework to Become a Better Podcaster
This is a long video, about an hour, with some things that will help you with your podcast production, specifically with content.
I went through it for you and my highlights, transposed for podcasters, are below. Everything here applies to your spoken word content and putting just a couple of these elements into your podcast production process will help you attract more people to your podcast and keep them engaged with it.
Why Writing Matters
You might not consider what you do with your podcast to be writing, but planning (and outlining) your episode) is the same thing here.
- Persuasion: Words are a powerful tool for persuasion, allowing one to communicate ideas clearly and effectively to a wide audience.
- Clarity of Thought: Writing (or planning/outlining) forces clarity in thinking. The process of writing helps individuals clarify their thoughts and generate new ideas, leading to better problem-solving.
- Idea Generation: Writing (or planning/outlining) is not just about communication; it also generates new ideas.
Related Tactics for Becoming a Better Podcaster
- Start with the End in Mind: Before recording an episode, during the planning stage, determine the desired reaction and action from the audience. This helps shape the content effectively.
- Copy Others: Emulate the delivery styles of podcasters or episodes that resonate with you. This practice helps improve your flow and style.
- Drafting and Incubation: Allow drafts to sit for a while before editing. This incubation period can lead to fresh insights and improvements in the final product.
- Editing: Great episodes comes from great editing. Separate drafting and editing phases to enhance quality.
- Use Simple Language: Clarity and simplicity are key. The words you use should be accessible, avoiding jargon or overly complex vocabulary.
- Curiosity Gap: Create intrigue in your opening lines (including the titles of your episodes) to encourage listeners to continue engaging with your content.
- Speak Like You Talk: Use conversational language to connect with listeners on a personal level, making your episodes feel more relatable. This sounds obvious, but a lot of podcasters overlook this and try to be a "radio announcer" rather than a friend.
Storytelling Techniques
- Good storytelling involves characters with clear intentions facing obstacles. This structure keeps listeners engaged and invested in the outcome.
- You can be the character. Your guests or co-host can be characters. Use storytelling to get people engaged with you as a person and care about your success (or failure).
Podcast Humor
A Podcaster, a Christian, and a Guy Who Does Crossfit ...
You've probably met somebody who's "found Jesus" and can't stop talking about it. You may even be that person.
Same for people who do Crossfit. Yeah, we know ... congratulations on your latest WOD and PR for burpees.
Podcasters are similar. And this is what a podcaster's brain looks like ...
