Prologue
Will China Tariffs Affect Your Podcasting? Yes!
Your podcasting equipment could soon cost you 143% more thanks to tariffs on Chinese-made goods.
A non-podcasting example of what this looks like ...
Since the last issue of Big Podcast Insider, my refrigerator died.
For the last week, I've been using an Igloo cooler (and nightly ice purchases) to keep my food cold. And I've got a week to go before I can get a new refrigerator delivered.
Why? People are freaking out over tariffs and there's been a run on appliances. Everybody wants to make their purchase before tariffs get any higher.
If you're looking to upgrade your podcast gear, now is a good time to do it. Even "Made in the USA" options like Electro-Voice RE20 uses parts sourced from elsewhere and will likely increase in price.
Fortunately, your speech is still free. Or is it?
Steal This Idea
Viral Death Clock
In the previous issue, I showed a great example of a meme that promotes your podcast for you.
This "Death Clock" is similar.
Things like this are actually pretty easy to set up for your podcast.
First step, you need a "quiz" tool to ask people questions.
Need one? Get Quizify for $19.
Then attach an image that people would want to share to the results.
Easy, right?

Podcast Marketing
Using Cross-Promotion to Grow Your Podcast
If you're looking go beyond a "feed swap" when doing a cross-promotion, these "newsletter tricks" will also work for your podcast.
Here are some ideas from the list, just to get you thinking. Want to do deeper with me? Get the audio version of this issue via my podcast for podcasters, Build a Big Podcast.

Podcast Hosting Skills
"I'll improve your storytelling skills by 176%."
Five essential storytelling techniques that can help you tell compelling stories and keep listeners engaged.
Here are some things to add to your stories:
1. Location
- Start by stating the physical location of the moment.
- Example: “Two weeks ago, I’m sitting on my couch ...”
- Tip: Avoid overloading with details; allow the audience to visualize their version of the location.
2. Actions
- Describe specific actions taking place at that moment.
- Example: “I’m at the airport waiting in line...”
- Importance: This technique propels the story forward and keeps the listener engaged.
3. Thoughts
- Share your internal thoughts during critical moments.
- Example: Instead of saying, “I was excited,” say, “I thought, ‘This is going to be so cool!’”
- Note: Use raw, unfiltered thoughts for relatability rather than sounding overly intellectual.
4. Emotions
- Convey emotions through vivid descriptions rather than simple statements.
- Example: Instead of saying “I was relieved,” describe your body language or actions to show that relief.
- Technique: Help listeners visualize the emotion to create a deeper connection.
5. Dialogue
- Include direct quotes or dialogue from characters in your story.
- Example: Rather than saying, “My friend was disappointed,” use exact phrases like, “Phillip said, ‘OUCH!’”
- Advice: Make dialogue engaging and concise to enhance interest.
By utilizing these techniques, storytellers can create engaging narratives that resonate with their audiences and foster a sense of connection and community.
