Prologue
Is Podcasting Saturated?
The short answer is "No."
Yeah, there are a ton of podcasts, but most podcasters aren't even doing the basics:
- quality audio
- creating something that's listener-focused
- editing out the "boring parts"
If you're feeling frustrated, revisit these things.
OVERRATED:
- expensive mics
- "celebrity" guests
- YouTube
None of these things is bad, they're just over-hyped as the "magic bullet" that will get you downloads, fame, and money. Without the "basics" listed above, none will help you.
Keep focused on the basics and keep going!

Steal This Idea
Walk the Walk
This is a memo from Apple dated February 1, 1980. They set a goal of eliminating typewriters from their offices.
I love the commitment. But be careful that you're not so far ahead of things that listeners aren't ready to follow you.
WHAT "TOO FAR" LOOKS LIKE: Making a guest that you really want and who you approach use some kind of "automated booking system" rather than manually setting up the session yourself. I get it—automated booking are great! But "rules" don't apply to everybody and there are some people you want to handle with extra care, especially when you're the one asking them for something.

Outrage is Cheap Fuel
New goal ... have a podcast people on social media love as much as old-school Cracker Barrel.
Kidding. Nobody cared about old-school Cracker Barrel until a few days ago.
And they still don't care ... NOBODY was/is going to Cracker Barrel, which is why they changed things up. The logo has been changed back to the "old timer" version and now people are complaining about the menu.
What you can learn from this ...
Don't be used to push somebody else's agenda. And if you want to change something, change it.
How to protect your podcast from the Outrage Industrial Complex.
Podcast Production
Does Your Content Suck?
Four things to look at
- No comments, no shares, no sign of life.
- Low "completion rate" for podcasts and low "time-on-page" for written content.
- There's no difference between you and competition.
- You're using the same content across multiple platforms you don't understand what makes each platform unique.
Good content creates conversation. It makes people feel something.
Worried about yours? This guy has some solutions for you.
The Business of Podcasting
10 Podcast Metrics to Measure Your Success
Do you agree or disagree that these elements are important for a "successful" podcast?
- Subscribers
- Total Downloads
- Downloads Per Episode
- Downloads Over Time
- Completion Rate
- Audience by Listening Platform
- Reviews, Ratings, Rankings
- Peak Times
- Website Visits
- Social Media Followers
Personally, I would argue that any of them can be important or none of them can be important, depending on what your goals for your podcast are.
Define your goals! That's the first step to finding success as a podcaster.
For example, if you want to get new clients, and the average sale of your service is $50,000, you don't need a lot of people listening, you need the right people listening.
But you may want a lot of people ... that's OK also.
Regardless, you need to get clear with what "success" means to you.
