Prologue
Comics and Podcasters
The idea of shortcuts in podcasting is fun to think about, but there's no replacement for:
- time behind a mic
- time editing yourself
- time evaluating what worked and what didn't work after it went live
This is how comics get good and it's how podcasters get good.
No shortcuts. Sorry.

The News Hijack
No. I'm not going to talk about Taylor Swift getting engaged.
But ... I do think it's worth mentioning Foreigner's response.
A news hijack is when you quickly create content that hooks into a trending news story so your show becomes part of the conversation while attention is hottest. For podcasters, that could mean dropping a timely segment or bonus episode that adds your unique angle (context, expertise, or entertainment) without just repeating headlines.
Done right, a news hijack boosts discoverability, earns shares, and positions your show as the place listeners go to make sense of what everyone’s talking about.
Cold as ice, indeed.

The Podcast Study

Why do people stop listening to a podcast? The #1 reason is THE PODCAST IS BORING!

Real Podcasters Make Podcasts
I'm not trying to shame anybody here, but when was the last time you published an episode?
The Business of Podcasting
Top Podcast Hosting Companies by Episode Share
This is the ranking of podcast hosting companies by new episodes published during the month of August 2025.
- Spotify for Creators 27.0%
- Spreaker 15.2%
- Buzzsprout 8.8%
- Podbean 4.0%
- Megaphone 3.9%
- Libsyn 3.0%
- Simplecast 2.7%
- Omny Studio 2.6%
- RSS.com 2.5%
- Transistor 2.3%
Any big surprises?
It's not shocking to me that Spotify for Creators is in the top slot. There are a ton of people "testing the water" of podcasting, so a free host is an easy choice. Personally, I release 30-31 sausage factory episodes per month on Spotify for Creators.
I am a bit shocked that Buzzsprout is almost 3x where Libsyn is, but I get it ... their great interface and personality is a winning combination that's obviously working well with the current breed of podcasters.
