Prologue
Podcast Freedom
Today is Independence Day in the United States, so it's a good time to ask yourself ...
Are you really free?
I'm not talking politically—I want you think about whether you're putting out the podcast you really want to.
Ask yourself these questions:
- If I had enough money, energy, and time, what would I walk away from right now? What would I walk toward?
- What stories am I telling myself about my success with podcasting, and which of those stories are rooted in fear instead of fact?
- What does a “push forward” look like if it’s aligned with ease, clarity, and self-worth? How can I begin that now, even in a small way?
If I can help you, let's talk. The best way for indie podcasters to work with me is Big Podcast AMP. The second-best way is one of my books on podcasting.

Podcast Marketing
How Starbucks Uses Psychological Triggers
Some "psychological triggers" from Starbucks for you ...
I found this one especially interesting ...
The Von Restorff Effect
Writing your name wrong, makes it stand out and encourages social sharing and free advertising.
Another ...
The Customization Effect
Allowing endless small choices increases attachment and perceived control.
Be careful with this! While people say they want "custom," too many choices exhaust people. This is one reason to give a single option for iPhone users and a single option for Android users on your podcast subscribe/follow page. See an example.
Sunk Cost Fallacy
The more effort people invest, the more committed they become.
This is true for podcasts. It's much harder for somebody to unsubscribe and find something else to listen to than to keep listening.
Something else which related to both Starbucks and your podcast is that both coffee and listening to a podcast can be acts of self care, allowing busy people a moment for themselves.
What you're doing is never "just a podcast."

Three Types of "Interview Questions"
If you look up "interview questions" on Google, you'll likely get a bunch of lists like this one, which are questions for job interviews, not media/podcast interviews.
SIDENOTE: Whenever I mention "I have an interview" in conversation, it's common for people to respond with questions about "the job I'm applying for." Anybody else?
Regardless, there's some good stuff here that will definitely get guests talking and help you have better pre-interviews and better interviews.
Congratulations on getting an interview, by the way. What kind of job are you applying for?
Pre-Interview Questions
(For building rapport and background, asked before the show)
- Why do you want to be on this show?
- What do you know about this show?
- What would make this a great interview for you?
- Tell me something about yourself that I can’t find out on Google!
- Who do you admire? *What’s a reason I shouldn't interview you? *If I was to ask your friends three words to describe you, what would they be?
- What are the biggest values you think your parents taught you?
- What do you want?
Interview Questions
(Asked during the live show; these dig deeper and create connection with listeners)
- Tell me about some people you’ve helped in your career.
- What’s something you’re bad at that you really wish you were good at?
- What’s your secret superpower?
- What are you learning right now?
- What would the title of your autobiography be?
- When is it OK to break the rules?
- What's an article or book you read recently that changed your mind about something?
- If you had a magic wand, what would you like to be known for?
- If you weren’t getting paid for what you do, would you still be doing it?
- What do you dream of?
- What is the thing that breaks your heart?
- What are you pretending you don’t know?
Fun/Novelty Questions
(For lighter moments, energy shifts, and listener engagement)
- When was the last time you wore a costume? And what was it?
- What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
- I’m going to give you five minutes. Teach me something new. Anything!
- When's the last time you did something nice for someone and what was it?
Let me know how these work for you! The best way to reach out is via Bluesky.
Podcast Production
How to Put "Teeth" in Your Podcast
To “put teeth” into your podcast and keep your audience coming back, focus on these action steps:
Craft Seamless Transitions: Use sharp editing, signature sound effects, and punchy voiceovers to move quickly between segments. Don’t leave dead air—every second should feel intentional and high-energy.
Build Recurring Segments: Give listeners something familiar to look forward to each week—a countdown, Q&A, or themed mini-feature. Recurring segments build ritual, create anticipation, and make your show feel like a destination.
Mix Predictability with Surprise: Balance regular features with unexpected elements: deep cuts, breaking news, or offbeat interviews. Keep your playlist or topic mix unpredictable so listeners never know exactly what they’ll get, but always know it’ll be worth listening to.
By treating your podcast like an event, rather than just a collection of content, you can foster loyalty, spark word-of-mouth, and grow a passionate community around your show.

Hit and Run Guests
There are some guests who just want to hear themselves talk. They show up unprepared, and let you deal with the mess.
No, guests aren't "too busy" to use a suitable mic—some just don't want to.
You are being judged on the audio quality of your guests. Don't let lazy ones pull your reputation down.
